DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 654 is a gas detector in the form of a glass funnel in which the conical part terminates in a "U" shaped tube. The whole is fixed vertically to a bakelite plate which is fixed to a bakelite base. The funnel is closed by a thin soft earthenware layer (pipe earth) (d) sealed with wax (L). The other end of the tube is closed with a cork (S) through which passes a sharpened metal rod (b) connected externally to a terminal. The tube behaves as a manometer being filled with mercury which normally does not touch the metallic rod. The other terminal (T2) is a metal wire fused in the tube and in contact with the mercury. The device can be connected to a bell with the auxiliary of a battery. If there is gas in the area, it passes the earthen ware layer and applies pressure on the mercury which contacts the metal rod and closes the circuit causing the bell to ring indicating the presence of gas.
