DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 547 is an ebulliometer, a device used to determine the boiling point of a liquid. Given that the boiling point of a solution is higher than that of the solvent, and that this rise is directly proportional to the number of molecules per mass of the solvent, this device is also used to determine molecular weights.
The apparatus consists of three glass elements, inserted one inside the other (see photo 1 and 2)
- The main test tube which has the largest diameter and into which is inserted a spiral tube for cooling the air and a thermometer.(see photo 3)
- A secondary test tube that in inserted in the principal one and that supports two lateral tubes inclined at 20° that serve for introducing the solution and for containing an air refrigerant during the measurement. This testube can be heated electrically by connecting the electrodes fused into the glass to a power supply. (see photo 4)
- A small testtube in which the solution used in the measurement boils. This testube is inserted in the secondary testube.(see photo 5)
