DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 455 is the spark coil invented by the German Physiologist Emil du Bois-Reymond (1818-1896) for his research in electrophysiology. It was known as the "Du Bois-Reymond sled". The apparatus consists of a wood base 114 centimeters long folded on itself (see figure 1) which can be opened to its maximum length. There are two coils, one fixed and one movable. The fixed coil (primary circuit) is wound on a cylinder within which a soft iron core with a wood handle and insulating paper cover can be placed at any position. The movable coil (secondary circuit) can be placed anywhere on the wood base since the cylinder on which it is wound has an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the fixed coil. The position of the movable coil is indicated by a pointer to the millimetric scale on the sled base. The primary circuit is connected to a DC source and the primary coil opens this circuit by attracting an iron plate on the making-breaking switch. The great variation in coupling between the coils due to the geometry of the sled permits a great variation in the strength of the electrical discharges available.
