DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 415 is a bolometer used to measure the energy deposited by an electromagnetic radiation by determining the increase of resistance of the absorbing element due to its heating. In this case the resistance measurement is made using a wheatstone bridge circuit.
The apparatus consists of a cube mounted on a wood support and having on opposite sides a resistance covered by a brass cylinder. The resistances are connected to a wheatstone bridge circuit inside the cube. On a third side there are four terminals marked: E+, E-, for the connection to a battery and G G for the connection to a galvanometer (see the photos 1, 2 and 3).
In use only one side with a brass cover is exposed to the electromagnetic radiation and the other side is shielded. The exposed resistance increases its resistance due to heating and the galvanometer signal yields a measure of the incident radiation.
