DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 349 is a microscope based on reflection and designed by Giovanni Battista Amici (1786-1863) and built between 1827 and 1832 in his factory in Modena, as evidence by the inscription "Amici Modena" on the horizontal tube. Amici was the most important Italian constructor of optical instruments in the nineteenth century and one of the most important worldwide. The microscope can be completely dismantled and the pieces were conserved in a mahogany box.Amici contributed much to microscope technology including the hemispherical front lens and the technique of immersion in water and different types of oils. The products from his factory included reflecting and refracting telescopes, micrometers, prisms and camera lucida (exhibit 56).
