DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 777 is a compound pendulum with a variable moment of inertia and consequently period. It is composed of two masses, M and m that can be moved along two metal rods (see drawing-1), the large mass M along the short rod and the small mass m along the long rod. Both rods are attached to a long black metallic rhombus to which is attached a horizontal knife support which can oscillate on top of a robust wood base. There is a graduated scale in the form of an arc on top of the base. Below the knife edge there is a cross bar to block an eventual circular rotation of the pendulum. The pendulum oscillates in a plane perpendicular to the knife edge with a period given by

.

where t is the period, I is the moment of inertia, m is the total mass, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and d is the distance between the axis of oscillation and the center of mass. The period of oscillation can be varied by changing the positions of the two masses. One can demonstrate that the amplitude of oscillation depends on the starting position and not on the positions of the masses.
