DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 764 is a siphon barometer in which the mercury pool used by Torricelli is substituted with a glass tube in the form of a "U". One arm about a meter long is closed while the other terminates with a snall open ampule. The tube contains mercury. The atmospheric pressure acts on the short open arm so that the difference in level of the two arms is the value of the atmospheric pressure.

The instrument was mounted on a wood support on which there was a brass scale from 620 to 800 mm, and a metal rod on which a sliding pointer to a position of the mercury level in the long arm was stable. The long arm was located between the brass scale and the metal rod (see photo 2). The long arm is broken and only the open ampule remains.
