DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 661 is a set of items for demonstrating the laws of Faraday on electrolysis. The set consists of two glass vases, each with two electrodes, resting in their respective depressions on a wood base which supports two brass bars each with two terminals. One electrode is heavy and mobile with a hole for weighing, while the other is folded in a U-shape with one end in the vase and the other attached to one of the brass bars.

The first law of Faraday : The mass of the substance deposited is directly proportional to the quantity of charge that passed through the electrolyte..

  1. Connect the weighed metal strips to the mobile electrodes.
  2. Fill the two vases with an electrolyte (for example, a solution of copper sulphate).
  3. Pass the same current in the two vases for different times
  4. Weigh the metal strips attached to the heavy electrodes and determine the amount of copper deposited.

The second law of Faraday: The masses deposited are directly proportional to their chemical equivalents.

Connect the two vases in series as in the figure and fill them with different electrolytes (for example CuSO4 and AgNO3 ). After having passed the same current through both vases, weigh the amounts of substances deposited (for example, Cu and Ag) and calculate the ratio.
