DESCRIPTION

The Muller spectrograph is the first complete instrument capable of obtaining good photographic images in crystallography and X-ray spectrography. It was particularly efficient for wavelengths for which the absorption in air was not strong. If an X-ray beam is incident on a crystal the resulting diffraction produces a spectrum in an angular spread in the same way as a beam of light incident on a diffraction grating. The diffracted beam of X-rays is not visible to the eye, but can be recorded on photographic emulsion. The same recording method can be used to determine the wave lengths of X-rays from a given target in an X-ray tube. This spectrograph is mounted on a black cast iron base in the form of a parallelepiped supported on three adjustable screws. Inside the base there is a clock mechanism which can rotate an axle supporting a metal plate, one rotation per second, and be controlled from the outside of the base. There is a brass bar of triangular cross-section on which is mounted the slit and the film holder.

By substituting the film holder with a circular camera (diametro 6 cm), it was possible to obtain the Debye spectrograph of powdered crystals.
