DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 65 is a Brongniart pyrometer based on the thermal dilation of a horizontal iron,or copper, rod fixed at one end and pushing against a lever which is connected to the graduated dial which indicates how much the rod has dilated when heated by an alcohol flame in the oven located below the dilating rod. The oven is a cylinder with a rotating cover to extinguish the alcohol flame when the experiment is finished. It is mounted on a wood base. This type of pyrometer was used by Alexandre Brongniart, director of "Manifacture nationale de Sèvres" to control that the temperature of the furnaces for porcelain did not exceed a certain limit. Modern pyrometers are optical and electronic.
