DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 626 is an accessory for the apparatus designed by Elihu Thomson (1853-1937) to demonstrate phenomena of induction and autoinduction. It consists of a lamp socket mounted on a wood support under which there is a coil wound on a horizontal wood cylinder. The wire of the coil is connected in series with the socket. In the socket there is a regular incandescent bulb. In the demonstration this accessory is placed on the bottom of a container of water which in turn is placed on top of a large electromagnet. When the latter is pulsed the accessory jumps upward and the lamp lights. The immersion in water effectively makes lighter this accessory so that the inductive force does not have to be very strong to make a noticeable effect.
