DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 592 is a gold leaf electroscope designed by the French scientist Alexandre Claude Martin Lebaillif (1764-1831) born in Saint-Fargeau. The instrument is enclosed in a type of bell jar on a base which has the form of a rectangular stool of a material which resembles bakelite (invented in 1907). The principal rod passes through the neck of the bell jar isolated by cork. The two gold leaves (missing) would have oscillated, up to the two upright rods attached in a variable position to the base, to avoid breaking. These rods can be connected to a battery and thus permit the sign of the induced charge brought to the sphere on the top of the main rod. This sphere is punctured and can thus be brought to ground with a wire.BIBLIOGRAPHY
