DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 568 is an instrument for the study of conduction in gas at low pressure consisting of a series of six glass tubes containing different gases at various pressures (in increasing order from left to right). The tubes are supported by a wood structure in the form of a box without a lid and are connected electrically by a blade switch. The demonstration involves connecting this instrument to the Ruhmkorff spark coil (exhibit 161) which applies the same pulse amplitude to ionize the gases in all the tubes. One observes for the gas type that neon emits red light, neon-Ar-Hg blue, helium yellow and argon green while for pressure, bright light for medium pressure and green fluorescence from the glass wall for very low pressure.
