DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 560 is a spectroscope with a crown of prisms and represents an evolution with respect to the spectroscope with a single prism as, for example that of Bunsen, in that both the resolutive power and the dispersive power are increased without increasing either the aperture or the magnification of the telescope. This instrument has a gear train that permits the movement of the prism crown and of the telescope. There are 8 prisms in total:six trapezoidal and two triangular. The latter two are located immediately in front of the collimator and of the telescope and deviate by total reflection the luminous beams so that they go from the collimator to the prism train and finally to the telescope. The trapezoidal prisms separate (diffuse) the different wave lengths. The measurement of the angular displacement is based on the graduated scale marked on the brass disk on which is mounted the telescope, the collimator and the eight prisms. The instrument rests on a column that terminates on a tripod with screws for leveling. There is also a micrometric screw for varying the slit opening on the end of the collimator.
