DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 548 is a Crookes tube, a glass tube with a cathode having six slits located in the center (see photo 2) while the anode located in a protrusion of the tube is a metal wire covered with aluminum.

The tube can be filled with different gases or evacuated through its connection with an accessory containing valves

A high voltage pulse can be applied to the tube using a Ruhmkorff spark coil (see exhibit 161). The cathode rays emitted by the cathode are accelerated toward the anode while one observes other rays behind the cathode which form a weak luminous glow. These rays travel in the direction opposite to that of the cathode rays(see design 1).

The deflection direction of these rays in the presence of electric or magnetic fields is the opposite to that of the cathode rays showing that these are positive particles called anodic rays. They are also called canalic rays because produced by ionization of the gas by the fast cathode rays in passing through the slits (canals) of the cathode.
