DESCRIPTION

The Askania magnetometer, also known as the Schmidt balance (Exhibit 617) or variograph, is an apparatus that permits measuring the variations of the horizontal (H) and vertical (Z) components of the terrestrial magnetism, from which one can determine the geomagnetic anomalies of the obervation location. The Schmidt balance for the measurement of the vertical component must be in the vertical orientation so that the vertical component of the magnetic field causes the magnetic needle to align with it. Oscillations are damped by the presence of eddy currents in the conducting wings which are constrained to move in the applied permament magnetic guides on both sides of the magnetic needle position. In the horizontal position, the horizontal component caused alignment of the magnetic needle with the same damping action as for the vertical determination.

The instrument is kept in a wood case along with several accessories, including a large compass. The wood case is inserted in a cloth-lined leather case with hooks, shoulder strap and handle for transportation. This instrument is sufficiently sensitive to find deposits of iron or the presence of ammunition.
