DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 501 is a 28-turn solenoid with red terminals for connecting to an electric circuit. It can be used for different experiments, for example:
- Roget helix: The solenoid is arranged as in design-2 with the lower terminal in contact with the mercury in a small cup. With the passage of current, each turn attracts the next and the solenoid shortens losing the contact with the mercury. Upon demagnetizing the solenoid attains the original length and the contact is renewed, causing the cycle to repeat.
- floating battery: place the solenoid on a cork plate connecting it to the zinc and copper plates immersed in diluted , to form a battery. The solenoid floats and points in the north-south direction, that is, it behaves as a magnet. See design-3.
- induced current: Connect the solenoid to an ammeter and slide a magnetic bar along its interior. The ammeter indicates the current in the circuit. See design-4
