DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 432 is an apparatus for observing the rings of Newton, an interference pattern due to the reflection of light between two adjacent surfaces, one spherical and the other flat. Normally the two surfaces are made of glass, while here the surfaces are metal. The two surfaces are enclosed in a cylinder of diameter 6 cm and 1.5 cm deep which can rotate on a horizontal axis while the fork holding this axis can rotate about its brass vertical support which uses exhibit 74 as a stand. One side of the cylinder is glass for observing the rings while the other side contains three screws for regulating the distance between the two surfaces and thus varying the Newton pattern.
