DESCRIPTION

The first stereoscope was constructed by Wheatstone in 1838. The idea arose from the fact that the images of a near object impressed on the left and right retina differed very little. Wheatstone thought that the sensation of depth was due to the combination of these different images.

The stereoscope in this exhibit is due to Brewster (1844) and was reproduced and distributed by the builder Doboscq. In use the stereoscopic image was inserted through the side slot. If opaque, the lid carrying a mirror was opened. If transparent, a ground glass slide was introduced with the image. In the two image paths there a half lenses that permited seeing the two images as superposed. Images were obtained using a stereo camera with two objectives.
