DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 392 is a bimetallic strip composed of two strips, one of steel and one of copper, attached together with 7 copper nails to form a single strip and attached to metal bar which is attached to a wood handle. It was used to demonstrate the different coefficients of thermal expansion of steel and copper. When heated it would bend with convexity toward copper and toward steel if cooled.

The coefficient of thermal dilatation of copper is Formula: [19\times 10^{-6} \textdegree C^{-1}], while that for steel is Formula: [12\times 10^{-6} \textdegree C^{-1} ]

This phenomenon is the principal of operation of temperature sensors used in many appliances (oven, irons, etc,) as well as thermostats for ambient temperature regulation.
