DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 382 is the Arago apparatus for demonstrating Lenz's law. It has two axles mounted on a mahogany base; one supports a brass wheel with a wood handle, the second a copper disk. Rotation of the first is transmitted to the second by a cord. To maintain tension in the cord, the first axle can be moved in a slide and fixed with a nut. The copper disk is covered with a wood box having a glass window on the top. On this window one places another brass disk which has a pivot in correspondence with the second axle and then a bar magnet whose center is constrained to rotate about this pivot. When one turns the wood handle the copper disk turns and also the bar magnet turns in the same direction by Lenz's law. The presence of the glass cover assures that the bar magnet is not influenced by air motion induced by the copper disk. To complete the demonstration, one can substitute the magnetized bar magnet with a non-magnetized bar and no effect is observed.
