DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 355 is torsion balance of the type known as "Hartmann & Braun", even though the constructor is probably italian. The inscription reads ("Istituto Fisico - Bilancia di torsione - 1 divisione = 1/10 milligrammo - temperatura +20° C). Its principal of operation is known as compensation and zeroing: The force to be measured is compensated by an elastic force controlled by a lever over the graduated dial until the zero pointer returns to zero. The screw for the zero correction is on the back side.

The dial extends from 0 to 50 in intervals of 0.1. This instrument is called a torsion balance but it really measures masses on the basis of the torque applied at the effective length of its internal arm when the zero pointer points at zero.
