DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 348 is an hypsometer, an instrument for determining the altitude above sea level by measuring the boiling temperature of a liquid, usually water. To deduce the altitude in this manner, it is necessary to know the relation between boiling temperature and pressure and also the relation between pressure and altitude.
The instrument is composed of three parts that can be superposed and mounted on a tripod: a container and two double-walled cylinders which can fit one inside the other to form a single cylinder which has a mesh at the bottom and on the top a hole for the insertion of a thermometer. The composite cylinder is then supported on the container which rests on the tripod. There is also an alcohol burner for heating the liquid to the boiling point. The wood box in which is conserved the instrument is lined with metal to allow heating the liquid inside the box as well as on the tripod.
While the instrument seems used, the burner has a new wick.
