DESCRIPTION
The Henley electro-meter consisted of a brass base on which was attached a boxwood support for an ivory protractor. In the middle of the protractor there is a hinged rod on the end of which is attached a pith ball.
The Henley electro-meter was the first instrument to measure an electric charge, though in an approximate manner. By touching the base with a charged body, the base became electrified, transferred charge to the pith ball which then caused the hinged rod to deflect to an angle indicated on the protractor scale. The effect is non-linear so that tables must be consulted to arrive at a voltage value. Besides being inaccurate, it is also rather insensitive, requiring thousands of volts for significant deflections.
