DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 331 is a galvanometer designed to be highly visible as desirable in a classroom. It consists of a large wood base with three legs on which are visible two coils of green wire in which the current to be measured flows to create a magnetic field in which is free to rotate a double permanent magnet in the form of the letter H, one leg in the internal magnetic field of the coils and the other above the coils. The dial is a double arc pointer suspended from the visible brass arc over the separation between the two coils and solid with the rotating double permanent magnet. The base is graduated in rather large units as this galvanometer is not calibrated, but is used for qualitative demonstrations. It can be used as a differential galvanometer since each coil can be separately connected to a different current source. If the pointer is a magnetic needle with polarization opposite to that of the the permanent magnet inside the coils this galvanometer becomes an astatic one.
