DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 283 is an apparatus for Ampere's experiments in the form of a flexible solenoid designed to demonstrate magnetic fields generated by currents. It consists of a wood base with three insulated feet that supports two metal columns of different heights that end with horizontal bars holding small cups for mercury. Hanging from the cups is a solenoid of 29 turns free to oscillate while its terminals make contact with the mercury. The leads to the solenoid are held separate by isolated blocks. In the absence of other magnetic fields, the solenoid would align itself with the earth's magnetic field.
