DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 278 is a natural magnet, a small block of magnetite, fixed to its base with a brass band. Magnetite (FR01: [ \rm FeO\cdot Fe2O3 ].), especially if cut properly attracts iron filings. Only some solid crystalline bodies (nickel, cobalt, iron compounds and some iron alloys) are sensitive to the attraction of magnetite. A piece of magnetite is defined as a natural magnet to distinguish it from an artificial magnet that can be obtained by induction.Dati Catalografici
