DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 271 is a hydrostatic balance, also known as an Archimedes balance, used to demonstrate the Archimedes' principle. In practice on the two plates are placed a solid cylinder and an empty but sealed one of equal weight. The internal volume of the empty cylinder is equal to the external volume of the solid cylinder. When immersed in water the plate with the solid cylinder seems heavier. When the empty cylinder is filled with water, balance in water is restored and one has verified that:"a body immersed in a fluid receives an upward thrust equal to the weight of the liquid displaced".

This balance can be used to measure the density of solids. In this case the solid is suspended by a very light string and balanced first in air and then in a liquid, usually water. The density of the solid is then the ratio of the weight in air to the weight difference times the density of the liquid.

This balance can be used to measure the density of a liquid using a solid of known density. In this case the density of the liquid equals the ratio of the mass difference to the mass of the solid in air times the density of the solid.
