DESCRIPTION

The moving coil galvanometer is a common instrument for measuring currents. It consists of a coil mounted on two steel pivots turning in jeweled bearings and located in a uniform radial magnetic field. The coil is connected to the external terminals through two spiral springs which provide a counter-rotational torque to the torque due to the magnetic force on the coil. In this way the equilibrium rotation of the coil is balanced against the couple of the springs and indicates directly the current.

To minimize friction in the pivots, the instrument should operate in a plane and two of its legs are adjustable to satisfy this condition. If calibrated in ampere, the galvanometer is called an ammeter.
