DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 254 is an Wollaston wire electrometer in which a platinum wire suspended vertically between two plates (A) and (B) is held in tension by a screw (V) as shown in design 1. The distance between the two plates can be varied by screws located on opposite sides of the instrument which is enclosed in a metal case that serves as an electric shield and protection from ambient electric fields.

In application, the voltage one wishes to measure can be applied either to the wire with the plates maintained at a constant voltage or to one of the plates with the other one at ground and a reference voltage on the wire. The displacement of the wire is observed through the microscope.

In the picture there is a flexible control like that used in photography that exercises a damping effect on the internal wire.
