DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 176 is a couple of identical Leclanché batteries consisting of a glass jar initially filled with ammonium chloride in which is immersed a negative zinc electrode, and a porous cylinder containing a carbon bar surrounded by a layer of manganese dioxide as positive electrode. The battery has two escape vents for the gases hydrogen and ammonia. The output current is constant and voltage is 1.5 volts until discharged.

The hydrogen produced collects on the carbon bar and after a while blocks the operation as a battery. The manganese dioxide slows this effect and the battery can furnish for a certain time a constant current at a voltage of 1,5 volts.
