DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 159 is the Rubens thermoelectric battery composed of a series of thermocouples in series in which the odd joints are maintained at one temperature and the even ones at another temperature. The thermocouple exploits the thermoelectric effect discovered by Thomas Johann Seebeck (1770-1831) in which a weak current appears in a circuit made of two different metals soldered at their ends when the two joints are at different temperatures, the value of the voltage being proportional to the temperature difference. A common thermocouple uses Bismuth (Bi) and Antimony (Sb) for which the emf is 113 microvolts/°C. By combining many thermocouples in series, a useful battery is obtainable as in the Rubens battery mounted on a brass stand with a metal structure to facilitate maintaining a constant temperature difference.ISCRIZIONI
