DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 118 is a horseshoe electromagnet attached to a cast iron support fixed in a large wood base. In the base there is a nest holding a large cast iron sphere weighing 11 kg. Attached to the top of the sphere is a small bar that permits a tight fit to the pole pieces of the magnet. When the magnet is energized and the sphere is lifted to permit the small bar to complete the magnetic circuit by being pressed to the pole pieces, the sphere is suspended in air. When the magnet current is interrupted, the sphere drops immediately into the nest.BIBLIOGRAPHY
