DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 671 is an arc lamp mounted on a tripod. The terminals are connected to the electrodes with a wire specially protected by insulation. There are two electrodes for the positive pole and two for the negative pole. Each is divided into strips and their separation is controllable by a lever. A voltaic arc is a spark of very high luminosity that arises between two carbon rods with the passage of a high current. At the tip of the positive electode a cavity is formed due to the sublimation of material caused by the high temperature of the arc and to the transport, due to the arc, of ionized metal that flows from the positive to the negative electrode. The positive cavity of a voltaic arc furnished with direct current is a practically point source of intense white light. The defect of this source is the continuous comsumption of carbon. The spectrum of this light goes far beyond the visible, down to 200 nm.
