DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 651 is a large electromagnet, capable of producing a magnetic field of 1 Tesla, for the Zeeman experiment. It is constructed with a voluminous iron core, wound with 1300 turns of conducting wire, in which can pass a high current. To concentrate the magnetic field in a restricted zone, the soft iron core is shaped as shown in Figure-1. A flash tube (exhibit 586) on a non-magnetic support can be placed in the gap for generating the Zeeman spectrum of hydrogen which can be observed both transversally and longitudinally (through an opening in one of the poles). The Zeeman magnetic rests on a large wood table on wheels and is protected by a plexiglass parallelepiped.
The magnetic field value can be varied to study both the weak field Zeeman effect and the strong field Paschen-Back effect. The structure of the observed lines varies according to the observation point: along the direction of the magnetic field, one sees two lines circularly polarized in opposite senses displaced symmetrically with respect to the normal line which disappears; in the perpendicular direction one observes three linearly polarized lines with the center line in the field direction while the two lateral lines in the orthogonal direction.
