DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 631 is a double pendulum designed by Augusto Righi (1850-1920) around 1890 to demonstrate the composition of two harmonic motions on orthogonal axes of equal and unequal frequencies and visualize the resulting Lissajous figures.The instrument consists essentially of two pendula, one free to oscillate parallel to the mounting plane and one in the perpendicular direction. The first has a mass consisting of a lead ring containing a funnel, the second a rectangular wood panel which oscillates below the lead ring. To generate a Lissajous figure, the funnel is filled with sand which falling on the oscillating panel generates the Lissajous figure. The lead ring is suspended on rods that can be varied in length to vary the frequency while the second pendulum has fixed frequency. Both oscillating systems are controlled by switches that depend on the relative frequencies.
