DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 627 is an accessory of the apparatus of Elihu Thomson designed to demonstrate phenomena of induction. It consists of an cylinder of insulating material (bakelite) filled with a large number of thin wires of soft iron fixed at one end with a copper semicircle. It is used to demonstrate the repulsion between a conductor and a circuit in which flows an alternating current according to the Lenz law.

The cylinder is inserted into the Thomson coil (exhibit 819) which is then excited to see an aluminum ring jump, not jump if broken, and jump more if cold.
