DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 609 is an organ pipe registered in the old inventory together with Organ Pipe 33, exhibit 576. The two pipes were called "Tartini pipes".

Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), a famous violinist but also composer and musical theorist, had discovered the so-called "third sound": when producing simultaneously two pure intense sounds at different frequencies, another note appears which has the difference frequency.

The two pipes 33 and 33-1 were evidently particularly adept at reproducing the Tartini effect.

This pipe produces the note UT₄ and is constructed exactly like Organ Pipe 22-1, exhibit 575, which describes its functioning.
