DESCRIPTION
The case contains a magnetized metal bar used to demonstrate some properties of a magnetic field. Originally there were two magnetized metal bars but one seems to have been stolen or misplaced a long time ago.
With two bars sliding one over the other as a south and a north pole approached, an iron object, usually a key, attracted to the end of a bar, fell as the north and south poles superposed. Besides one could show the repulsion between like poles by inverting one of the bars.
One could visualize the lines of magnetic force by sprinkling iron filings over a sheet of paper placed on top of one of the bars.
OBSERVATION
Inside the box there is a note (see image 1) that states
Someone stole the missing bar on the 11th or 12th of May, 1879
