DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 590 is a polarimeter, constructed by the Officine Galileo after 1950, based on a more modern design of the Laurent Polarimeter, exhibit 587. Also here one measures the angle through which the polarization plane has rotated when passing through the tube containing the sugar solution.

The light beam is polarized by a nicol and analyzed by another nicol at the exit; in half of the field there is a half-wave plate so that one sees a circle divided in two parts, illuminated differently. To obtain the maximum precision, one must turn the analyzer until the two halves of the circle are equally illuminated. One measures the difference between these equal illumination angles with and without the sugar solutions.

Respect to the Laurent polarimeter, the vernier is not external but visible through the second eyepiece.
