DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 558 is a spectroscope constructed by A. Kruss similar to that constructed by Bunsen. With this instrument Kruss working with Kirchoff discovered cesium and rubidium. The instrument is composed of an equilateral prism at the center of a circular disk supported on a column with a tripod base. Around the prism there is a collimator that permits through an adjustable slit the entry of a parallel beam from a light source, a telescope for observing the refracted lines as well as a superposed graduated scale supported by a second collimator. The prism is covered by an empty brass cylinder which has three openings for the telescope and the two collimators. The relative position of the collimator and the telescope is adjustable with a gear and micrometric screw.
