DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 531 is a device for studying electrical conduction in gas.
It consists of a glass tube mounted on a metal base: from one end the tube rises straight up and then curls down through 22 spirals around the first part to the other end. Within both ends there are electodes fused in the glass. Inside the tube there is mercury and mercury vapor. By connecting the two electrodes to the secondary of a Ruhmkorff spark coil, the discharge causes a strong light emission from the tube.
The tube is conserved in its wood case that lacks the lid.
