DESCRIPTION
exhibit 495 is a single wire electrometer used to measure small voltages and currents. It consists of a condenser formed by two metal plates separated by a distance which is adjustable using micrometric screws on both sides of the apparatus. Between the plates, there is a thin conducting wire maintained in tension by two springs soldered to its ends.
The entire apparatus is enclosed in a metal case (abcd) with two external terminals T1 e T2. The wire is displaced to the left or to the right in proportion to the potential difference between the wire and the case. This displacement is observed with a telescope (see photo-1). There is a window with a lens which facilitates illuminating the wire. There is also a container of a hydroscopic substance which keeps dry the air in the case.
