DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 491 is a Troughton and Simms theodolite, an optical instrument used to measure azimuth and zenith angles and applied regularly in surveying. The apparatus consists essentially of:

  1. A heavy metallic base which rests on three leveling screws;
  2. A horizontal circular graduated scale of 360° divided in 10° intervals;
  3. Three verniers for reading the horizontal circular scale;
  4. A circular vertical scale with three verniers for reading their positions;
  5. Two symmetric microscopes to ease reading the positions of the two circular scales;
  6. Three bubble levels;
  7. A telescope;
  8. An alcohol lamp for illuminating the scales;
  9. A ball-topped lever for orienting horizontally the apparatus;

There are two wood cases, one for the base instrument (Foto-1) and one for the telescope united with the graduated azimuthal circle (foto-1) in exhibit 315.
