Exhibit 472 is a commutator, an electronic device that easily allows changing the direction of current in a circuit. These devices always contain a fixed and a movable part. In this example, the contact between the two parts was established by mercury (see exhibit 469). The insulated handle seems to be bakelite, the first plastic.
