DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 444 is a differential galvanometer designed by Rosenthal. It consists of four coils arranged as two symmetric pairs. Each current to be compared is routed through one coil of both pairs so as to create a magnetic loop which acts on the two Z-shaped magnetic needles attached to the twisted wire torsion support to which is attached a mirror readable by the Poggendorf method (see design: 1). By orienting the permanent magnetization of the needles in opposite directions, this galvanometer can give the sum or difference of the two currents and be astatic at the same time, a truly magnificent instrument. To switch from sum to difference of the two currents, it is sufficient to inverse the sense of one of the currents.
