DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 443 is an apparatus consisting of a telescope that can slide on a column on which is fixed a horizontal graduated ruler (missing in this case). In use one adjusts the telescope to focus on the graduations on the ruler. When a light ray is incident on a mirror in a measuring instrument, the ray arrives on the ruler. If the mirror rotates through an angle (θ), the reflected ray is deflected φ=2θ. This method of measuring small rotations is due to Poggendorff. For a complete setup, see exhibit 371.
