DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 424 is a psychrometer which measures the relative humidity of the air, based on the principle that in dry air evaporation is faster than in damp air. The instrument consists of two identical thermometers on a slightly inclined horizontal support on a brass column with a wide base containing a ventilator. One thermometer with its bulb dry measures the temperature of the air while the other, having its bulb enclosed in a wet cotton ball, indicates a lower temperature due to the heat energy lost to evaporation. See also exhibit 467. In the present model there is a ventilator which forces the evaporation from the wet cotton ball. From the temperature difference, one can calculate or read from a curve the relative humidity. In this psychrometer, the thermometers are missing.BIBLIOGRAPHY
