DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 388 is the vertical Oersted apparatus, analogous to the horizontal version, with the difference that here the magnetic needle rotates about a horizontal axis. The device consists of a brass bar in a-U form with a circular brass base and small ivory cups (1, 2, and 3) in which mercury provided secure contacts. There is a battery and a galvanometer G to ascertain the current flow, an invertor RK (reversing key) to invert the current obtained from the battery and a switch D (deviater) to force the current from one arm A to the other B. In this configuration the magnetic field acting on the magnetic needle could be obtained in 4 different ways leading to two different orientations of the magnetic needle.BIBLIOGRAPHY
