DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 357 is a tone changer invented in 1897 by the German psychologist William Stern to study the human sensitivity to changes in sonic frequency. The instrument consists of a resonator in the form of a brass cylinder of variable volume subject to a constant flow of air through an opening in the top. The screw on the front moves in a known graduated manner the piston which varies the volume and thus the resonant frequency.
